만일 네 오른눈이 너로 실족하게 하거든 빼어 내버리라 네 백체 중 하나가 없어지고 온몸이 지옥에 던져지지 않는 것이 유익하며 (29)

우리는 예수님의 말씀에서 세 가지 죄에 대한 교훈을 배울 수 있습니다.

첫째로, 예수님은 사람의 ‘오른눈’이 그 사람을 실족하게도 한다고 말씀하십니다. 즉, 죄의 원인이 다른 사람이나 주변 환경이 아니라 우리 자신이라고 해석할 수 있습니다. 그래서 죄의 문제를 해결하기 위해서는 가장 좋은 방법은 우리 자신을 면밀히 점검하는 것입니다.

둘째로, 죄를 떼어 내는 것은 신체의 일부를 잘라 버리는 것처럼 고통스러운 일입니다. 그래서 확고한 결단과 인내가 필요합니다. 이것이 회개하는 사람들이 가져야 할 올바른 마음가짐입니다.

마지막으로, 죄는 결국 우리를 사망에 이르게 합니다. 사망은 생명 되신 하나님과 단절된 상태를 의미하며, 하나님이 없는 모든 시간과 장소는 우리에게 지옥과 같습니다.

우리는 날마다 죄에 대한 경각심을 가져야 합니다. 오늘 죄를 대하는 우리의 태도와 마음가짐이 예수님의 말씀에 부합하고 있는지 점검하고, 죄를 우리의 삶에서 끊어 내도록 결단하며, 실천할 때에 성령님께서 우리를 도와주실 것을 믿습니다.

기도

하나님, 죄에 대한 경각심을 깨워 주시고, 성령님의 도우심으로 죄를 우리의 삶에서 끊어 낼 수 있도록 도와주시옵소서. 아멘.

 

“If your right eye causes you to stumble, gouge it out and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to be thrown into hell.” (v. 29)

From Jesus’ words, we can learn three lessons about sin.

First, Jesus says that a person’s “right eye” can cause that person to stumble. In other words, we can understand that the cause of sin is not other people or our surroundings, but ourselves. Therefore, the best way to deal with the problem of sin is to examine ourselves carefully.

Second, removing sin is as painful as cutting off a part of the body. That is why firm resolve and perseverance are necessary. This is the right attitude that those who repent should have.

Finally, sin ultimately leads us to death. Death means being cut off from God, who is life; and any time and place without God is like hell to us.

We must have a sense of alertness toward sin each day. Today, as we examine whether our attitude and mindset toward sin align with Jesus’ words, and as we decide to cut sin out of our lives and put that decision into practice, we believe the Holy Spirit will help us.

Prayer
God, awaken in us an awareness of sin, and by the help of the Holy Spirit, enable us to cut sin out of our lives. Amen.

내가 율법이나 선지자를 폐하러 온 줄로 생각하지 말라 폐하러 온 것이 아니요 완전하게 하려 함이라 (17)

율법이 하나님이 이스라엘 민족이 약속에 땅에 들어가기 전에 그들이 거룩한 삶을 살 수 있도록 주신 규칙입니다. 그러나 유대인들은 율법에 담겨있는 하나님의 의도를 왜곡했고, 타인을 억압하며, 자신들의 의로움을 자랑하는 도구로 사용하였습니다.

선지자들은 하나님의 말씀을 백성에게 전하는 사람들입니다. 그러나 성육신하신 하나님이 곧 예수님이시며, 예수님께서 직접 사람들에게 말씀을 전하셨기 때문에 사실 선지자들은 더 이상 필요하지 않았습니다. 그러나 예수님은 율법이나 선지자들을 버리거나 폐기하지 않으셨습니다. 예수님은 오히려 사랑으로 율법을 완성하는 길을 알려 주셨고, 모든 사람에게 하나님의 말씀을 전할 수 있는 자격을 주셨습니다. 즉, 부족하고 인기가 없고 망가진 것을 버리고 폐기하는 것이 아니라, 고치시고 새롭게 하시며 온전하게 하시는 것이 예수님의 뜻입니다.

마찬가지로 우리가 조금 부족하거나 길을 잃거나 실수를 하더라도, 예수님은 우리를 외면하시거나 버리지 않으십니다. 오히려 우리의 부족함을 은혜로 채우시고, 깨어짐을 고치시며, 깨끗하게 하셔서 우리를 온전하게 만드십니다. 오늘도 우리를 완성해 가시는 예수님의 사랑과 은혜를 믿으시길 바랍니다.

기도

하나님, 주님의 사랑과 은혜로 나를 완성하여 주시옵소서. 아멘.

“Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them.” (v. 17)

The Law is a set of rules God gave the people of Israel so that they could live holy lives before entering the Promised Land. However, many Jews distorted God’s intention in the Law and used it as a tool to oppress others and to boast about their own righteousness.

The prophets are those who deliver God’s word to the people. Yet because God incarnate is Jesus Himself, and Jesus spoke God’s word directly to the people, the prophets were, in a sense, no longer necessary.

Still, Jesus did not discard or abolish the Law or the prophets. Rather, in love, he showed the way to fulfill the Law, and he gave all people the privilege and calling to proclaim God’s word. In other words, Jesus’ will is not to throw away or reject what is lacking, unpopular, or broken, but to heal, renew, and make it whole.

In the same way, even when we are lacking, lose our way, or make mistakes, Jesus does not turn away from us or abandon us. Instead, He fills our weaknesses with grace, heals our brokenness, and cleanses us so that we may be made whole. Even today, I hope you will trust in the love and grace of Jesus, who is completing us.

Prayer
God, please complete me through Your love and grace. Amen.

하늘로부터 소리가 있어 말씀하시되 이는 내 사랑하는 아들이요 내 기뻐하는 자라 하시니라 (17)

예수님께서 세례 요한에게 세례를 받으시고 물 밖으로 나오실 때 하늘이 열리고, 성령이 비둘기같이 내려와 예수님 위에 머무시며, 하늘로부터 예수님이 하나님의 사랑하는 아들이라고 말씀하시는 음성을 사람들이 듣게 됩니다.

그런데 예수님은 세례를 받으실 필요가 없으셨습니다. 죄가 없으셨기 때문입니다. 그러나 예수님께서 겸손히 하나님의 뜻에 순종하시고, 죄인들의 자리까지 내려오셔서 세례를 받으심으로써 우리에게도 예수님이 받으셨던 세례를 받을 수 있는 자격이 주어졌습니다. 즉, 우리도 세례를 받을 때 하나님께서 우리를 위해 하늘을 여시고, 성령을 내려 주시며, 우리를 사랑하는 자녀로 받아 주십니다.

오늘은 우리가 받았던 세례를 감사하며 그 의미를 다시 생각해 보시길 바랍니다. 또한 세례를 통하여 하나님과 맺었던 언약을 기억하고 지키기 위해 마음을 새롭게 하는 하루가 되시길 바랍니다.

기도

하나님, 나에게도 세례를 베푸셔서 예수님처럼 하나님의 사랑하는 자녀로 삼아 주시니 감사합니다. 날마다 주님의 자녀로 성실히 살아가도록 인도하여 주시옵소서. 아멘

And a voice from heaven said, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased.” (v.17)

When Jesus was baptized by John the Baptist and came up out of the water, the heavens were opened. The Holy Spirit descended like a dove and rested upon Jesus, and the people heard a voice from heaven declaring that Jesus is God’s beloved Son.

Yet Jesus did not need to be baptized, because he was without sin. But in humility, Jesus obeyed God’s will and came down even to the place of sinners. By receiving baptism, he granted us the privilege of receiving the same baptism he received. In other words, when we are baptized, God opens heaven for us, sends down the Holy Spirit, and receives us as his beloved children.

Today, I invite you to give thanks for the baptism you have received and to reflect again on its meaning. May this be a day to remember the covenant you made with God through baptism and to renew your heart to keep it faithfully.

Prayer
God, thank you for granting me baptism and making me your beloved child, just as you declared over Jesus. Lead me to live faithfully each day as your child. Amen.

그러므로 회개에 합당한 열매를 맺고 (8)

세례 요한은 예수님께서 대중 앞에 나와 사역을 시작하시기 전에 세상을 깨우고 준비시키는 역할을 했습니다. 그는 하나님의 나라가 도래할 것을 선포했고, 죄를 회개하는 이들에게 세례를 베풀었습니다. 그리고 당시 종교 지도자였던 바리새인들과 사두개인들을 향해서는, 그들이 말로는 회개하지만 회개에 합당한 열매가 없음에 대해 지적했습니다.

우리가 올바른 회개를 했다면 당연히 삶에 변화(열매)가 생겨야 합니다. 첫째는, 자신이 저지른 죄에 대해서 후회하며, 그 죄와 단절되어야 합니다. 둘째로, 죄로 인하여 멀어진 하나님과의 관계를 회복하기 위해 노력하게 됩니다. 셋째로, 나눔과 사랑을 통해서 더 많은 사람들이 죄에서 벗어날 수 있도록 돕고, 세상의 불의와 싸워 하나님의 정의를 세워가게 됩니다.

회개는 단순히 우리가 저지른 잘못에 대한 죄책감을 덜기 위한 수단이 아니라, 우리 자신이 실질적으로 변화되고 또 우리를 통해서 세상이 변화되도록 하나님께서 주신 은혜의 도구입니다. 우리의 회개가 입술에만 머물지 않고, 오늘부터 하나님께서 기뻐하시는 열매를 더욱 풍성하게 맺게 될 것을 믿습니다.

기도

하나님, 우리가 진정한 회개를 통하여 합당한 열매를 맺을 수 있도록 성령을 내려 주시고 도와주시옵소서. 아멘.
“Therefore, bear fruit worthy of repentance.” (v. 8)

John the Baptist played the role of awakening the world and preparing people before Jesus came forward publicly and began his ministry. He proclaimed that the kingdom of God was near, and he baptized those who repented of their sins. And to the religious leaders of that time—the Pharisees and Sadducees—he pointed out that although they claimed to repent with their words, they showed no fruit worthy of repentance.

If our repentance is genuine, then change (fruit) should naturally appear in our lives. First, we should feel true remorse for the sin we have committed and break away from it. Second, we begin to work to restore our relationship with God, which was broken by sin. Third, through sharing and love, we help more people be set free from sin, and we stand against the injustice of the world as we build up God’s justice.

Repentance is not simply a way to ease the guilt we feel over the wrongs we have done. It is a gracious tool God has given us so that we may be truly changed—and so that, through us, the world may be changed as well. We believe that our repentance will not remain only on our lips, but that beginning today we will bear even more abundant fruit that pleases God.

Prayer
God, pour out your Holy Spirit upon us and help us bear fruit worthy of repentance through genuine repentance. Amen.

그의 남편 요셉은 의로운 사람이라 그를 드러내지 아니하고 가만히 끊고자 하여 (19) 요셉이 잠에서 깨어 일어나 주의 사자의 분부대로 행하여(24)

예수님을 잉태한 마리아의 약혼자는 요셉이었습니다. 그는 의로운 사람이었습니다.

첫째로, 그에게는 자비가 있었습니다. 당시 혼례를 치르지 않은 상태에서 임신한 마리아는 간음죄로 죽임을 당할 수도 있었습니다. 그러나 요셉은 마리아가 임신했다는 사실을 알았을 때 그녀를 긍휼히 여겼고, 자신이 할 수 있는 최선으로 그녀를 보호해 주었습니다.

둘째로, 요셉에게는 믿음이 있었습니다. 천사가 요셉의 꿈에 나타나 마리아가 성령으로 잉태한 것이니 그녀를 데려오라고 했을 때, 그는 따지거나 자신의 생각을 주장하지 않고 순종했습니다.

하나님은 이처럼 자비로움과 순종하는 믿음이 있었던 의로운 요셉에게 어린 예수님을 돌보고 양육하는 일을 맡기셨습니다

오늘 요셉의 모습을 본받아, 내 이웃을 친절과 자비로 대하고 하나님의 말씀에 순종하는 의로운 삶을 살기를 기도합니다.

기도

하나님, 다른 이들의 허물에 대하여 자비로운 마음과 하나님의 말씀에 대하여 순종하는 믿음을 주시옵소서. 아멘.

Matthew 1:18–25
“Joseph her husband was a righteous man and did not want to expose her to public disgrace, so he planned to dismiss her quietly” (v. 19). “When Joseph woke up, he did what the angel of the Lord had commanded him” (v. 24).

Joseph was Mary’s fiancé when she conceived Jesus. He was a righteous man.

First, he had mercy. In those days, Mary’s pregnancy before the wedding could have led to her being punished for adultery—even put to death. But when Joseph learned that Mary was pregnant, he showed compassion toward her and protected her in the best way he could.

Second, Joseph had faith. When an angel appeared to him in a dream and told him that Mary had conceived by the Holy Spirit and that he should take her as his wife, Joseph did not argue or insist on his own thoughts. He obeyed.

God entrusted righteous Joseph—who had such mercy and obedient faith—with the task of caring for and raising the child Jesus.

Today, following Joseph’s example, I pray that I may live a righteous life: treating my neighbors with kindness and compassion, and obeying God’s word.

Prayer
God, grant us merciful hearts toward the faults of others, and faith that obeys your word. Amen.

아브라함과 다윗의 자손 예수 그리스도의 계보라 (1)

마태복음은 특별히 유대인들을 위해 쓰였습니다. 유대인들은 자신들이 하나님의 선택을 받은 아브라함의 자손이라고 믿었고, 자신들을 구원하고 위대한 왕국을 세울 새로운 왕을 기다리고 있었습니다. 그들에게 예수님이 그들이 기다리던 새로운 왕이라는 사실을 알려 주기 위해, 아브라함으로부터 예수님까지 이르는 족보가 마태복음에 가장 먼저 기록되어 있습니다.

그런데 예수님의 족보는 완벽하지 않습니다. 그 안에는 흠이 있고 실패한 이들도 있습니다. 아브라함은 자신의 안전을 위해 아내를 “누이”라고 거짓말했고, 야곱은 형을 속여 장자의 축복을 빼앗았습니다. 라합은 이방인이었고, 그녀의 직업은 “기생”이었습니다. 밧세바와 다윗은 불륜 관계에 있었고, 르호보암의 어리석은 판단으로 이스라엘은 남과 북으로 갈라지게 되었습니다.

이처럼 예수님의 족보에는 흠이 있고 죄가 있는 사람들, 심지어 이방인까지 있습니다. 그러나 그럼에도 불구하고 아브라함에게 주신 하나님의 약속(“내가 너와 네 후손의 하나님이 되겠다”)은 변하지 않고 지속되어, 마침내 예수님을 통해 완전히 이루어졌습니다. 그리고 그 약속은 오늘 우리에게도 계속 이어지고 있습니다.

때로 우리가 실패하고 실수하며 우리의 모습이 부족하더라도, 하나님은 변함없이 우리를 사랑하시고 우리에게 주신 구원의 약속을 지키십니다. 우리는 이 사실을 믿음으로 감사해야 합니다. 그리고 오늘 우리의 모습이 실망스럽고 나약하며 온전하지 못하더라도, 좌절하거나 근심하지 말고 오늘도 힘을 내어 일어서서 새롭게 시작하는 우리 모두가 되길 기도합니다.

기도

하나님, 변함없는 하나님의 사랑과 구원의 약속을 믿고, 오늘도 일어설 수 있는 힘을 주시옵소서. 아멘

“The genealogy of Jesus the Messiah, the son of David, the son of Abraham.” (v. 1)

The Gospel of Matthew was written especially for Jewish readers. The Jews believed they were descendants of Abraham, God’s chosen one, and they were waiting for a new king who would save them and establish a great kingdom. To tell them that Jesus is the new King they had been waiting for, Matthew begins with the genealogy—from Abraham all the way to Jesus.

But Jesus’ genealogy is not perfect. It includes people with flaws and failures. Abraham lied, calling his wife his “sister” in order to protect himself. Jacob deceived his brother and took the blessing of the firstborn. Rahab was a Gentile, and her occupation was that of a prostitute. David and Bathsheba were involved in an adulterous relationship, and because of Rehoboam’s foolish decision, Israel was divided into the North and the South.

In this way, Jesus’ genealogy includes flawed and sinful people, and even Gentiles. Yet despite all of this, God’s promise to Abraham—“I will be your God and the God of your descendants”—did not change. It continued through history and was finally fulfilled completely through Jesus. And that promise still continues for us today.

Even when we fail, make mistakes, and fall short, God loves us without change and keeps the promise of salvation given to us. We should give thanks in faith for this truth. And even if our lives today feel disappointing, weak, and incomplete, may we not fall into despair or worry. Instead, may we find strength to rise again and begin anew today.

Prayer
God, help us trust in your unchanging love and your promise of salvation, and give us strength to rise again today. Amen.

누구든지 형제가 사망에 이르지 아니하는 죄 범하는 것을 보거든 구하라 그리하면 사망에 이르지 아니하는 범죄자들을 위하여 그에게 생명을 주시리라 사망에 이르는 죄가 있으니 이에 관하여 나는 구하라 하지 않노라. (요한일서 5:16)

세상은 누군가의 잘못을 비판하고, 그에 해당하는 벌을 내리는 것이 정의라고 생각합니다. 그러나 요한은 오직 하나님만이 우리의 심판자이시라는 전제하에, 우리의 역할은 다른 사람을 판단하거나 정죄하는 것이 아니라 죄인들, 부족한 사람들, 실수한 사람들을 위해 기도하는 것이라고 말합니다. 왜냐하면 우리는 하나님 앞에서 모두 죄인이기에 다른 사람을 정죄할 자격이 없기 때문입니다. 또한 그리스도를 통해 분명히 보여주신 하나님의 뜻은 죄인들을 구원하는 것이기 때문입니다. 그래서 우리가 기도하면 하나님께서 죄인에게도 새로운 삶을 살아갈 생명을 주신다고 요한은 말합니다.

만약 우리 주변에 죄의 문제가 있거나, 주변으로부터 질타와 비판을 받는 사람이 있다면, 우리의 역할은 그들을 정죄하거나 외면하는 것이 아니라 그들에게도 하나님의 생명이 임할 것을 믿고 기도하는 것입니다. 비판과 정죄가 난무하는 세상에서 기도하는 믿음이 우리 삶에 깊이 뿌리내리길 바랍니다.

기도

하나님, 다른 사람들의 잘못과 실수에 대해 판단하고 정죄하는 것을 멈추게 하시고, 그리스도처럼 그들을 위해 기도할 수 있는 믿음을 주시옵소서. 아멘.

“If anyone sees a brother or sister commit a sin that does not lead to death, he should pray, and God will give life to those who commit sin that does not lead to death. There is a sin that leads to death; I am not saying that he should pray about that.” (1 John 5:16)

The world often thinks justice means criticizing someone’s wrongdoing and giving them the punishment they deserve. But John, grounded in the truth that God alone is our Judge, says that our role is not to judge or condemn others, but to pray for sinners—for those who are weak, struggling, and prone to mistakes. This is because, before God, we are all sinners and therefore have no right to condemn others. Moreover, God’s will, clearly revealed through Christ, is to save sinners. So John teaches that when we pray, God gives even sinners the life to live anew.

If there is someone around us struggling with sin, or if someone is being criticized and blamed by others, our role is not to condemn them or turn away from them, but to pray. Our role is to pray in faith, trusting that God’s life will come upon them as well. In a world overflowing with criticism and condemnation, may a praying faith take deep root in our lives.

Prayer
God, help us stop judging and condemning others for their faults and mistakes, and give us faith to pray for them, as Christ did. Amen.
